Mentor and White Ribbon Ambassador

We are very proud that one of our mentors, Kallum Jury-Field, was recently nominated by Family Violence Response Co-ordinator Lee Haskel for the role of White Ribbon Ambassador for New Plymouth. Male ambassadors play a vital role in building support, visibility and developing a shared understanding of the White Ribbon campaign within their social groups, workplaces and communities. Ambassadors are chosen to embody the principles of the campaign, their willingness to challenge the behaviour of abusive men, and to convey key messages directly to their communities. Many high profile people in business and politics are represented as ambassadors at the national level including Prime Minister John Key, Hone Kaa, Reuben Wiki, MP Jonathan Young, Labour candidate Andrew Little, Phil Kingsley-Jones and singer Stan Walker. Apart from Stan Walker, Lee felt that the young male demographic was not represented particularly at the local level and she nominated Kallum because he is young; he is in a vital front-line position dealing with vulnerable clients on a day to day basis (Kallum works at Work and Income) and he is highly regarded by peers and management alike for his leadership qualities. We couldn’t agree more with Lee, Kallum is a wonderful mentor to his mentee Brayden, who he has been matched with for over 2 years now.

Lake Mangamahoe Bush Quest 2011

A great outing was had by all who attended the Bush Quest at Lake Mangamahoe a few weeks ago. The kids certainly enjoyed exploring the bush and finding out a little more about their water supply! There were some wonderful looking picnics and some happy hungry kids to feed! A big thanks to all the mentors that attended, it was encouraging to see the kids having so much fun. A special thanks to Roger and Anna of Freeze Frame Fotographics for the photos they took for us. The School Based mentors held their Bush Quest the previous week, and they also had a ball. They had the added bonus of watching a police dog demonstration, so a big thanks to Snr Constable Al Munro, the NP Police dog handler, and to our own Paul Lampe who kindly agreed to be the bait!

Big BOOTCAMP features on TVNZ Good Morning show

Aroha Hathaway is joining forces with Anna Julienne, putting her body on the line to raise money for Big Brothers Big Sisters of NZ. Aroha and Anna are part of the celebrity ambassador team participating in the Big BOOTCAMP being run by Les Mills to raise funds for the Auckland branch of Big Brothers Big Sisters.

BIG BOOTCAMP participants train three times a week, military-style with a twist, for four weeks in teams. Teams compete against each (and their own willpower) while raising money for Big Brothers Big Sisters through individual online fundraising pages.

This fundraiser is the biggest charity BOOTCAMP ever run by Les Mills with 18 teams and over 144 people participating.

BIG BOOTCAMP kicks off on 31 October and runs until 25 November 2011.

Alongside Aroha and Anna, other celebrities on the ambassador team include Mary Lambie, Carol Hirschfeld, Julian Wilcox, Harry McNaughton, and Andrew Morrison.

Big Brothers Big Sisters is being launched in Auckland with the help of BIG BOOTCAMP

The Auckland branch of Big Brothers Big Sisters of New Zealand is being given a major boost with the help of the Les Mills fourth annual charity bootcamp, which this year aims to raise $100,000 for the newly established Big Brothers Big Sisters of Auckland programme.

Minister for Social Development, Employment and Youth Affairs, Paula Bennett, comments, “I’ve had the privilege of seeing Big Brothers Big Sisters in action first hand and am fully supportive of bringing this much-needed charity to our country’s biggest city. I encourage all New Zealanders to get behind BIG BOOTCAMP to help make a difference for Kiwi kids.”

Reece Zondag, CEO of Les Mills, says, “Les Mills Charity Bootcamp has a proven track record of raising significant funds for its charity of chose. The people who participate have an amazing time, raise money for a good cause and get fit in the process.

We’re really exciting to have around 140 people participating this year including some well-known faces like Miriama Smith and Carol Hirschfield.”

BIG BOOTCAMP kicks off on 31 October and runs until 25 November 2011.

The earthquakes in Christchurch have been tough for everyone in the area but particularly so for children. Some have lost loved ones, many have lost their homes, and most have had friends and family move away. It’s been really rough.

Here’s a positive response being offered by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Christchurch – a Mentoring Programme for Earthquake Affected Children.

You can get involved by volunteering to be a Big Brother or Big Sister, or making a donation (see link below)to help sponsor a new mentoring friendship for a child in Christchurch.
