Walking through Spooners Tunnel proved an interesting experience for mentors and young people on an outing organised by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Nelson in May 2013. The 1.4km-long tunnel was pitch dark, but with the aid of torches and headlamps it was possible to see weta, fungi and mementos from the rail tunnel's past, such as old railway sleepers.

One of BBBS Nelson's mentors, who is involved with the Sports Fish for Youth Charitable Trust, organised a ``have a go'' day for young people and their mentors at the Waimea River Park Fishing Ponds in April. It was a great opportunity to learn how to fish from experienced anglers, and enjoy a pleasant morning in the country.

The annual BBQ breakfast at Tahunanui beach is always a popular event with mentors and young people. After a feed of pancakes there's an opportunity to chat, chill out or play games. This year the Ride On bike skills course was set up at the event as well, and Nelson firefighters dropped in to give a demo with fire hoses.
